RAD Brings Olympic TV Coverage to The Netherlands

Ethernet-Based Video Transported over SDH Infrastructure

August 18, 2008: NOS, a public broadcasting company in the Netherlands, is using telecommunications access equipment from RAD Data Communications to transmit its coverage of the 2008 Olympic Games from Beijing.
Working together with RAD's local Dutch partner Qi ict, NOS selected RAD's RICi-E1 Fast Ethernet-over-E1 Network Termination Units (NTUs) to provide a reliable Ethernet link between the network's headquarters in the city of Hilversum and its temporary television production unit in Beijing. The Ethernet traffic runs over two dedicated international E1 lines leased by the network from a large international operator.

The E1 protocol has to be converted at both locations to Fast Ethernet in order to link office automation systems and transport audio and video signals. One E1 link is used to transport NOS programming to Beijing so that correspondent reporting from there can follow the broadcasts from The Netherlands in real time. The other E1-link is used to transport audio traffic with reports and interviews from Beijing to Hilversum.

EtherAccess Product Line

RAD's RICi-E1 NTU is an element of its EtherAccess product line for delivering both Ethernet and emulated services over any infrastructure. EtherAccess is designed to provide carriers and their customers with a cost-effective, standards-based system for delivering a uniform user experience with verifiable Service Level Agreements (SLAs).
